Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups dried sorrel flowers (hibiscus sabdariffa)
  • 8 cups water (divided)
  • 12 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced
  • 1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • Juice of 2 oranges (about ½ cup)
  • Juice of 1 lime (about ¼ cup)
  • Ice cubes for serving
  • Optional: Pineapple slices or mint sprigs for garnish

Instructions

  1. Boil the Sorrel: In a large pot, combine the dried sorrel flowers, 4 cups of water, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and sliced ginger. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat and let the mixture steep for at least 1 hour (or overnight in the fridge for a deeper flavor).

  2. Strain the Mixture: Once steeped, strain the liquid through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a large pitcher or bowl to remove the solids. Discard the solids.

  3. Sweeten and Flavor: Add the sugar to the strained liquid and stir until dissolved. You can adjust the sweetness to your preference. Stir in the orange juice and lime juice for a bright, citrusy kick.

  4. Dilute and Chill: Add the remaining 4 cups of cold water to the pitcher and stir well. Taste and adjust sweetness or citrus if needed. Chill the drink in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.

  5. Serve and Enjoy: Pour the chilled sorrel drink over ice cubes in glasses. Garnish with pineapple slices or mint sprigs for an extra touch of freshness. Serve and enjoy the tropical flavors!
