Ingredients

Scale

For the Casserole:

  • 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy), casings removed
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces (or 16 oz frozen green beans)
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (sharp or mild)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup crushed buttery crackers (like Ritz) or panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Ingredients:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) . Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Brown the Sausage:

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and crumbled, about 6-8 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the sausage to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess fat. Leave about 1 tablespoon of drippings in the skillet.

Sauté Aromatics and Green Beans:

  1. In the same skillet, add the diced onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the green beans and toss to coat them in the flavorful drippings. Cook for 2-3 minutes to lightly soften the beans.

Create the Creamy Sauce:

  1. Pour in the chicken broth and heavy cream. Season with smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it reduce slightly, about 5 minutes. Stir in half of the shredded cheddar cheese and half of the Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth.

Assemble the Casserole:

  1. Combine the cooked sausage and green bean mixture in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining cheeses evenly over the top.

Add the Crispy Topping:

  1. In a small bowl, mix the crushed crackers or breadcrumbs with melted butter. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the casserole.

Bake:

  1. Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes , or until bubbly and golden brown on top. If desired, broil for 1-2 minutes at the end to achieve extra crispiness.

Garnish and Serve:

  1. Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if using, and enjoy alongside crusty bread or a simple salad for a complete meal.
